HALLOWEEN ARRIVED. Sara’s school had their activities. Suzanne had baked some biscuits with creepy iced witches on them. She was outdone by some of the wealthier moms baking large cakes and providing toffee apples and candy. Most of the children after school went to each other’s houses to play trick or treat but Sara wasn’t invited. She sat waiting at the gate, wistfully gazing at the other girls who piled into their mom’s SUV’s Suzanne wished the moms to the devil and taking Sara’s hands said, ‘’Let’s go get an ice and then we go to the store to take part in the activities.’’ Strawberry shortcake ices cheered Suzanne and Sara up and they donned their costumes and prepared the stalls and counters for the customers.

Sara giggled when Mark came in dressed as Dracula with fangs and red eyes. ‘’Who is that creepy witch I can see hiding behind the tree?’’ He jumped toward her and tickled her. She pushed him away giggling. ‘’You can’t come out yet, it isn’t dark!’’

‘’We should hang some garlic around our necks,’’ said Suzanne. ‘’Or there is a stake over there.’’ She pointed at the display. He feigned fear walking backwards and cowering making Sara laugh.

‘’My Daddy pretended to be Dracula once’’, she said and her face fell, remembering the one time he had arrived during a Halloween party at a neighbour’s house. Suzanne burned with anger at the memory. He had come to borrow money off her and dressed up to humour his daughter and worm his way into her good books. Then after promising to come back the next weekend he had vanished again. That was the last time she had seen him. When he had gone she had found he had taken the savings she had hidden and left her in debt, no money to pay her big bills.

‘’Come. Let’s give the candy and tickets to the customers who are coming in.’’ She grasped her daughter’s hand and led her to the stall where for the next two hours they dolled out drinks, candy and tickets. Sara was lucky enough to win a prize. She grabbed the toy and put it behind the counter, pulling it out when the customers had gone. She’d had a great time, the customers complimenting her on her costume and make-up. Glowing with praise, she danced about the shop floor. This is my real daughter, thought Suzanne, not the shrinking violet the school kids had made her act.

Then something got into her head and she chased toward the display where the marionette had danced. Her face fell. ‘’She’s gone.’’ Her lip quivered. ‘’Someone has bought the doll, Mom. My friend has gone.’’ Before Suzanne could think of an excuse, Mark intervened smoothly. ‘’There was something wrong with it. It will come back later when it is mended.’’

‘’She told me last night she didn’t want to leave but she was taken by someone.’’

‘’When did she tell you this?’’ asked Suzanne. She would have to bite these tales in the bud.
